Nslookup is a basic Internet utility to make queries to Domain Name System (DNS) servers. Given an IP address, it returns the hostname, and given a hostname, it returns the IP address. In order for nslookup to work, one must have an exact hostname or IP address. If the user types the hostname or IP address incorrectly, the server complains that the host is not found. Inslookup has some intelligence to correct some typos in the hostname or IP address (extra letters, swapped letters, mistyped letters, or missing letters). Image another scenario: The user knows an interesting domain name, but not exact name. How can he/she find out the hostname and IP address of the unknown host? Or if the user wants to know the hostname and IP address of all machines in a sub net, how can he/she achieve this? Inslookups has the capability to solve all these questions: it can work on a subset of regular expression on the domain name or IP address. For example, it can query the hostname with a format like greatcompa*.com, greatcomp?ny.com, or 123.123.123.* and 123.123.123.3*, etc.
